Lucy Large

Principal Urban Design Officer

About

Lucy is an urban designer with extensive experience within the built environment industry. Before joining the Spring Cohort 2023, she worked at Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design where she was involved in a variety of projects, ranging from large and small-scale residential and mixed-use masterplans, to town centre regeneration, public realm design and community and stakeholder engagement.

She is committed to creating sustainable environments with people at the forefront of design, volunteering on projects outside of work, and engaging with local communities to develop an understanding of the relationship between people and places.

Passionate about inclusive design, leadership and engagement, Lucy has been recognised for her work developing the ‘Autism in the City Toolkit’, which seeks to improve the experience of living in cities for people with autism through increasing awareness of neurodiversity across the industry and unlocking cities for people with autism.

Spring Cohort 2023

Dacorum Borough Council

Throughout her placement as Principal Urban Design Officer at Dacorum Borough Council, Lucy was involved in various projects covering a broad spectrum of proposals. These included, but were not limited to, applications for individual residential extensions to borough-wide strategic projects.

As Principal Urban Design Officer, she worked across Development Management, often collaborating with several teams within the department, from Strategic to Majors and Minors and working closely with Conservation. This involvement enabled her to experience schemes throughout the planning process and provide design advice from the early stages of development to the finer delivery details.

Early on, Lucy recognised Officers would often not have the time to communicate across departments or even with other officers regarding applications. The role of the Principal Urban Design Officer enabled not only a consistent approach to design advice but also a holistic approach concerning the broader vision of the borough.
