Alum

Thomas Tzortzi

Historic Places Adviser (Levelling Up)

About

Thomas is a research-led spatial designer with expertise in (re)generating places that centre around creating community and lasting experiences. With extensive international experience, he has led the development of award-winning museums, galleries, public spaces, exhibitions, attractions and brand centres, including Museum MACAN, Indonesia’s first contemporary art gallery.

His strengths lie in the strategy, facilitation, and vision of projects in the public sphere, as well as in engaging a participatory and collaborative approach. Prior to becoming an Associate, he completed a part-time master's in Urban Studies to investigate social issues and theory alongside his practice.

Autumn Cohort 2022

Historic England

Thomas was matched with a role as Historic Places Advisor at Historic England, tasked with building relationships with local authorities across the North of England in order to influence the early stages of place-based projects through heritage-led urban design and regeneration. With the new formation of the Levelling Up Places Service, he took on a national role as Levelling Up Place Advisor.

During his placement, he provided placemaking, planning and design advice on behalf of all seven of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport's Arms-Length-Bodies (ALBs) — Arts Council, Historic England, Sport England, National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Lottery Community Fund, Visit England, and British Film Institute — covering Levelling Up Funded projects across the North West of England. His work covered the interests of all ALBs and ranged from aiding the delivery of projects, such as procurement or planning, through to adding value, such as running creative workshops or delivering written advice.
