Design Coding
Applying design codes for modular construction methods on large-scale developments
The use of design codes to support the delivery of high-quality places is high on the Government’s agenda with the recent publication of a draft national design code and associated consultation.
This Case Study is based on work carried out by Joanne Preston during a year-long placement (April 2019 - March 2020) as a Principal Urban Design Officer for Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service. It consolidates lessons learned from experience of using design codes on Phase 2A of Northstowe new town and reflects on how design codes were negotiated, reviewed and applied for development that used modular construction methods.
